The organization.

Speedmo is a shorthand name we created for Speed Mountaineering, which is a sport we did not create, but we're sure as hell going to run with ;) Speedmo is also the registered name of the organization that manages this website, races, events, and route information for the sport of Speedmo.

This is a term we coined for mountaineering with a wing. Free flight enables mountaineers to hike, run, climb, ski up mountains and fly down, unlocking some of the fastest missions ever. We felt like Speed Mountaineering was fitting name before the muggles create their own vocabulary for our pursuit.

Paragliding is type of free-flight. The pilot wears a harness connected by lines to a fabric wing that can be foot-launched. The pilot controls the wing primarily through a toggle in each hand and shifting the weight of their body in the harness. Within paragliding, there are essentially three types of wings: Full-size wings have a large surface area (typically over 20m²+) and are designed to glide efficiently, allowing the pilot to gain elevation in lift bands and thermals. Mini wings are smaller (typically 16-20m²) to provide a lighter and smaller option for hike & fly pilots. Speed wings are small (typically under 16m²) and designed for speed. These wings have a less efficient glide, but more agility (which also means they are more reactive, and require specific training).
